Dear Eun Bi,
You are only ten years old. You were a little toddler when my first son was born. While I nursed my little newborn, I wonder what you were doing. Was your family hungry? Was there enough to eat?
When he was five, my son got stuck in a tree. It took one policeman and five fire-fighters to get him down. How many policemen did you have to hide from on your long journey to freedom?
Our son saw Star Wars for the first time when he was in first grade, even though I worried it might be a little too violent. I wonder if you had witnessed your first public execution by then.
While I was homeschooling, I wonder if your mom was sitting in an illegal market, selling goods to help your family survive. While I maneuvered an over-flowing shopping cart through the aisle of the grocery store, worrying about utility bills and complaining about the weather, was your mom foraging the countryside, worrying about starvation and fearing you would freeze to death?
You are in South Korea now. I don't know how long your journey took. I don't know how many miles you had to walk, how many buses you had to ride, how many times you had to hide from those who would send you back.
I don't even know if you're whole family made it out safely with you. I only know you are free.
I would like to be with you as you sing freely, eat freely, talk freely. I would like to pray over you while you sleep, knowing that you are far from danger.
Since I can't, I will pray for you here. Pray for you to rest after your long journey. Pray for you to have peace.
I pray that when you grow up, you will remember how sweet freedom truly is. I pray you will never take it for granted. And I pray that nothing will steal your freedom away from you.
I pray that you will know true spiritual freedom. Freedom from fear. Redemption from sin. I pray that you would laugh. And that your laughter would be the sweetest sound in the ears of those who care for you and love you.
God bless you, Eun Bi. Welcome to freedom.
