Happy Friday, and thanks for joining the Christian Fiction Friday blog hop!
Here are five paragraphs from chapter five of my current Work in Progress, since this is the fifth Friday of the month.
Ryuk held his glasses in his hands, flipping the ear piece up and down in rhythm with his speech. “You’ve probably all heard rumors by now about the Wasteland, where we’re planning to send some of you. Think of it as a test operation. A simulation, if you will. You will each be assigned roles while you’re there and will be evaluated on how well you adapt to the demands of the new environment.”
There it was again, the heat in the back of her neck, the certainty that if she turned around she would see Jin-Sun. His soft smile. His dimple that made him look at least five years younger than he really was.
“As you know, only one or two of you will go on to earn Zenith. The rest of you, if you graduate from the Academy at all, can expect to offer support in-country. If you signed up for the Academy because you wanted to see the world, that’s just not gonna happen unless you get Zenith.
“Some of you here aren’t graduating at all. The director and I talked last week, and we have officially closed registration for the year. No more recruits to replace dropouts. This is it, guys, the final stretch. Where we watch you carefully to see who gets Zenith and who gets stuck behind a desk decoding mundane international chatter for the rest of their careers.
“Outside the dojang is a list. It’s got the final cuts for this semester. The site we’re taking you to may be a simulation, a test if you will, but the Wasteland is secure. So secure that we wouldn’t invite you there unless we were ninety percent sure you are agent material. A quarter of you sitting here aren’t, and this afternoon you’ll pack up your bags and head on home. Leave the training to the real students. As for the rest of you, if your name is on the list, you’ll also see which recruits will accompany you to the Wasteland. And let me give you a warning. The only reason the Party is granting you access there is because they fully expect you to graduate. You have any doubts about joining the Agency, you better hope your names are not on that list, because there’s no way the Party’s gonna let you just walk away after you’ve been to the Wasteland. Any questions?”
